We found more than we bargained for when we tore down the Samsung Galaxy S22 and the S22 Ultra. The vibration motor surprised us with its sudden redesign and new location, and the thermal management in here points to some serious heat issues. And while the periscope camera is undeniably cool, some of these changes to the S-series have us wondering whether the Snapdragon processor is simply getting outclassed for now by Apple Silicon.

We break some stuff, show the insides of that periscope camera, and talk repair, so tune in and take a listen. Want some nitty gritty chip ID? Our community’s got your back—snag some S22 Ultra Chip identification or grab those vanilla S22 ICs. If reading is more your speed, we’ve got a text-based S22 teardown with a full video transcript and some still images ripe for perusing.

Teardown highlights
  • New Vibration Motor: Samsung may be trying to chase a robust Taptic-Engine-like feedback, without sacrificing as much internal space as Apple does. The S22 series tucks a new linear actuator into its lower speaker unit to get a fresh buzz.
  • New Vapor Chamber: Stainless steel construction makes this vapor chamber both stronger and more efficient, while measuring an ultra-thin 0.4 mm.
  • Repairability: Disassembling the Galaxy S-line hasn’t changed much. In fact, both the Galaxy S22 and the S22 Ultra score a 3 out of 10 on our repairability scale.
